Over the last few months I have had people reach out to me to get fit for reasons that may surprise you. We all know the healthy ones that we have been told time and time again like to have a healthy heart, to improve your circulation, to avoid muscle loss, to minimize the risk of getting osteoporosis, for brain health and the list goes on. But what about the really fun reason…. to do the things in life that give you a rush, things that make you feel wild and crazy, things that make you whole as a person, things that give you meaning, things that bring you closer to the universe. As much as we want to be healthy, life is not a spectator sport.
This afternoon, I took the afternoon off to watch my favourite sports team on TV, the Toronto Blue Jays. As exciting as this game was, I could not help but say to myself, “Man! That pitcher is living the dream”. I felt like I was living vicariously through someone else’s eyes. At some point in our lives we may need to do that but why now? We have a choice now and at some point we will not have this choice. For this reason, take one step towards living your bucket list and get moving.
Everyday, people seek my advice on goals for weight loss, better digestion, less stress and improved strength. But here are some other reasons that I have been given over the past few months:
To beat my brothers in golf, to carry a backpack, to be able to go zip lining with my son, to go on an adventure wilderness hike in the Yukon Territories, to feel confident and strong on my motorcycle, to ride my horses with my daughter, to travel with my grandchildren. This is bucket list exercise. I challenge you to write the following down and put it where you can see it everyday:
“I am committed to exercise from this day forward because my goal is to do this: ___________________________ (bucket list goal).”
Congratulations for making this commitment! Stay Pumped!
